Successful Weekend of Racing

1

After what seemed like a full week celebrating my birthday, I was a little apprehensive about how the legs might fare on the weekend. Training had been great but a few late nights, the scramble to get Sarah and Wynne on a plane to Canada and lots of Sydney work travel had created a few stresses in addition to the normal ones.
Saturday was the Pop Stewart Memorial Handicap (Northern Combine) in hilly Lancefield. I was given scratch, which I expected, and started with 8 riders on our mark. That turned to 6, then 4, by the halfway mark as we started to pick up the bunches in front of us. We had the lead group in sight near the finish and I launched an attack over the top of the last climb but failed by 40 seconds to reel them in. I took the fastest time for the 100km race and happy with the hit-out.
In the back of my mind was the fact that I had to back up on Sunday at the Castlemaine 6-Hour. It was race 6 of the 7-race Victorian Enduro Series and so there was plenty at stake. I was torn between resting up for it or doing the back-to-back days in prep for the 24. The legs were a little sluggish early but I brought it home well. My last lap was my third quickest – a good sign after 6 hours and 3000m of climbing – and I managed to take fourth in a good field. The result also consolidated my third place in the series which I should be able to hang on to barring disaster. The final round is two weeks after the Worlds so I will have to try to hold on to a semblance of form despite my body no doubt wanting to shut down.
My sister Sheridyn put in a great effort as team support and a good trial run for Canberra in October. She’ll be coordinating the pits for me and big thanks to her for putting in a big day in the car and pit.
This weekend I am flying to Canberra to pre-ride the Worlds Circuit for Enduro Magazine and then race the Stromlo 7-hour on Sunday. The Worlds are edging closer and it’s strictly good food, clean living and lots of sleep between now and then. I only have to tell my new baby about the sleep bit…
