Season 2010 Officially Finished

3

The 2010 season is officially over, ending on Saturday with the Gravity 12 Hour in a comparatively relaxed team of three.

A month has passed since the World Championships and the body is only now starting to return to normal. In that time I have had two races: the Gravity (fun) and the final round of the Victorian Enduro Series at Lake Mountain (strictly business).

I went into the final round of the 7-Race State Series in third place, and needed only a solid result to consolidate my position. The weather for the weekend was apocalyptic and I was amazed and dismayed that the race wasn’t postponed. Starting at race at 1300m in torrential rain is not ideal when you have ridden yourself into oblivion just three weeks earlier.

Before the starter’s gun a decision was made by race organisers to halve the race length from 6 to 3 hours. I got off to a good start with Phil Orr and Sam Chancellor but it was clear on lap one that the freshly cut tracks would stand up to the traffic. By lap two long sections of uphill became unrideable and the downhills were a touch disconcerting with zero grip and lots of speed. Having done enough by the two-hour mark to claim third in the series I pulled the pin, and then learned that Phil Orr in front of me had done the same. It was an anti-climactic way to finish the series that had been a major focus for the year, but I was very satisfied to have put together a strong campaign that lasted six months.

The Gravity 12-Hour was a completely different affair. I was riding with a couple of mates (Tommy P and Cam Lester) and it was strictly for giggles. I rode consistent laps and we had a mini-battle going on with the Northside Wheeler team (Tim McGrath, Malachi Moxon and Brett Kellet) which we eventually lost. We managed second in Men’s Triples and fifth overall. Drive trains suffered big time in the bog holes that grew longer and wider as the day wore on.

I am looking forward to riding socially between now and Christmas before rebuilding for the Terra Australis in late March. I had two big objectives for the year – a good showing at the Worlds and a consistent Victorian Enduro Series. I managed both, and a few good results besides (including third at the Forrest 6-Hour, some team wins with Jess Douglas).

A huge thanks to Giant Bikes for all their support this year – it made a material difference to have their backing and such a great collection of bikes to ride. During the dark points of a race I also used the fact that Giant had bothered to back me as extra motivation so thanks again. Also a huge thanks to Sarah for putting up with a part-time husband and father for the back half of 2010. Hopefully in the next few months I can put some more family credits in the bank!
